- For those of our listeners that are new to Linux Mint, Mint has an excellent tool called “USB Image Writer”. Isaac uses it all the time to write images to SD and Micro-SD cards. The only other things he uses more often are Chrome and Terminal.

I wanted to follow up Isaac’s tip for the “USB Image Writer” but is it not in the Software centre or the package manager in my version of Mint 17.1. I found a link to it here:
http://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/usb-imagewriter
But when I hit the ‘Install’ button it would not working as it is ‘virtual’. Thanks in advance for any pointers as to how I can install “USB Image Writer”.

Guys, where have you found the part which says “It’s not yet ready for the desktop”? It’s in the URL but it’s not mentioned anywhere in the article. I’ve long forsaken this part because Linux fans hate me for that. Also, Wi-Fi is listed under problematic things. In fact recently I spent like half a day trying to set up Wi-Fi on my new laptop – I made it work perfectly, but no normal person could have done that.

Rob, I use pacman every day, and I don’t see anything in the announced feature list for version 5.0 that I would ever use.
Just yesterday I installed Mint 17.3 MATE on an older laptop with Broadcom BCM4311 wireless. At first, no wireless at all. I initially installed the recommended “bcmwl-kernel-source” from the “Driver Manager” but that did not work either. So, then, using Synaptic (or other):
uninstall: bcmwl-kernel-source
install: firmware-b43-installer
Then remove from blacklist:
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and comment (with #) the line:
blacklist bcm43xx
Reboot – works. Other laptops with Broadcom and Mint MATE have “just worked”, so go figure!
Here’s hoping that the new ‘X-Apps’ will reduce the future forking of apps in some Linux distros. Unity and GNOME 3 devs have ‘dumbed down’ many in the name of arbitrary simplification or convergence, while here is the chance for actually Adding useful functionality to desktop apps again.
