About patents, have a look at the work by Michele Boldrin and David Levine. They wrote a book entitled “Against Intellectual Monopoly”. There is also an interview with Boldrin at econtalk.org (http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2009/05/boldrin_on_inte.html).
