Wayland

We worked really hard on Wayland and we got to the point where it feels solid and the experience is almost on par with X11. Wayland support will no longer be considered “experimental”. In the next version of Cinnamon, both X11 and Wayland will be fully supported.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon also received the following improvements:

  • A cinnamon-list-windows command was introduced to make it easy to list all open windows and to quickly see their position, size, HiDPI/app/backend info.
  • Muffin now rounds coordinates and dimensions for all Clutter actors. This guarantee crisp and precise rendering and fixes blur issues when applets or desktop components forget to do so themselves.
  • Support for systemd’s graphical-session. This boosts Cinnamon’s compatibility with many upstream projects.

System

SSH keyring support was improved system-wide.

Fixes were implemented in the LightDM configuration. 

Support for fingerprint authentication was improved in Slick Greeter. Placing your finger on the fingerprint reader is enough to log in. You no longer need to press Enter afterwards.

Security Updates

Another severe security flaw was found this month. This time, it affects mintupdate: CVE-2026-59159.

Security updates were sent 3 weeks ago, for all affected versions, in both supported and EOL (End-of-Life) Linux Mint and LMDE releases.

Proton’s age verification map provides a real-time overview of where these measures are being introduced and how they are being implemented. Clicking on any country reveals information about the progress of legislative proposals in that region, with the tool offering a detailed overview of the different approaches adopted by governments regarding age verification legislation. Andy Yen, founder and CEO of Proton, strongly argued that requiring every user to provide their identifying information is simply tantamount to “the death of privacy online.”

Proton advocates for a different approach to child protection. One that does not compromise the very concept of online privacy and is based on client-side processing, with results that are fully anonymized thanks to end-to-end encryption and publicly accessible open-source code.

  • Got my last proxmox node upgraded to 9.  A bit of a tedious process but not what i would call difficult.
  • But then i started having problems with the set top VM. The audio had failed to work with the hdmi port and the video output was only working sporadically. I tried several different settings adjustments and nothing was working. Several of those attempted fixes caused slow boots or locking up as it booted. This would require me to start the mini pc with iommu off so that the VM in question would not start due its dependance on having the graphics portion of the apu.
  • For example i saw that the ram on the VM was set to ballooning for a maximum of 8gb in a system with 16gb. I set it to 16 gb to try to speed things along and this meant that when the VM tried to start up it grab ALL the ram of the system leaving none left for the base operating system so it would freeze.
  • Turning off the iommu is a fairly simple process. During the grub boot menu press e and add a parameter of intel_iommu=off. This shuts off pci passthrough and i was able to reduce the ram to 12gb. Turning off IOMMU makes it so that the graphics can not be passed through and the VM fails to start. Yes a cheat to get to the fix but hey if it works…
  • In the end there is a setting that changed in the machine type with the upgrade to 9 that requires setting the type to i440fx with vIOMMU set to virtio.  its a sub setting within the machine setting under advanced.  After that everything started working as expected. But other machines have a similar setup and did not require that.
  • So now i am working on making a second smaller mini rack. Mostly because i can and it will help corral the equipment in my living room.  I started out by going through tinkercad and loaded all of the parts and put them in the correct positions and started printing.  Granted the final product is different from the original design but no plan survives first contact.  So i printed the sides top and bottom and put in the heat set inserts and got those put together.
  • Then i printed the lenovo mount and the mount for the drives and i already had a print with the netgear 8 port switch and i printed the patch panel and purchased a new set of passthroughs.
  • I had to mount the netgear backwards at first to hold the shape while i was printing the spacers for the back.  I was also able to use the sidewall mounts that i had previously made for the hard drives and mount the power strip to the side and use the inside for cable management.  The power bricks i was able to mount to the bottom side of the lenovo mount.
  • The netgear will be replaced with a cheap 2.5g switch but it works for now
  • I have previously mentioned that i had a lot of problems with my printer and i had sent an email off to elegoo.  They did get back to me and advised me to perform some maintenance and some tests before we start replacing parts and a quick calibration seems to have fixed the issue.
  • I was going to use one of my power supplies for the 2.5 inch drives and would have had to print the shelf for it.  But then i went out and found some interesting things at the local resale. I was able to pick up a brick style power supply that has a ide power connector on it and came with a sata adapter. This frees ups some space on the mini rack and will allow for a bit more flexibility in the build by not needing a full size or half sized PC ATA power supply. It should not be a problem with the 4 2.5 inch drives that i will be using. It will also be a good test to see if that will work.
  • started working on the lenovo thats going into the new rack to try and get it to hold more drives.  It does have an m.2 slot and i wanted to see if my old adapters that were supposedly broken would work on it.  So i pulled out four of them and the two that were previously internal would not work at all even though the lights would come on.  I will need to test them on another device in the future to verify but they may actually be bad.  The other two however that were for the usb-c adapter were interesting.  Both of them were recognized but only the first drive was ever seen.  very frustrating.  they seem to be in working condition but i do not have a use for them right now and the usb c adapter does seem to be the issue. Anyways with how the m.2 is positioned i was not able to have both the m.2 adapter as well as the sata internal drive connected so i had moved it to the adapter as well for the testing which is how i figured out that only one drive could be seen at a time.  So i was setting this up for four external drives and this device already has a drive that is hooked up over usb.  not ideal but you work with what you have. I looked through my parts and i found the m.2 sata adapter that has two ports on it and goes where the wifi adapter is.  It had previously not worked on the HP mini’s that i have proxmox running on in the garage and those have 2.5g adapters in those slots anyway.  I would have liked to get a similar adapter for the lenovo but limitations are limiting.  I could go through the hassle of moving things around so one of the HP is in the house and the lenovo is in the rack in the garage but i will figure that out on a later date.  So the adapter for two drives works but the lid will not close this way and i had to get a sata extender to get the main drive hooked back into the correct slot above the m.2.  So i ordered some new right angle sata connectors that will go to the back or front instead of off to the side and i started migrating all of the lxc’s and back up images off the device.  I ended up reinstalling proxmox 9 from scratch and migrated back or rebuilt everything as needed.  But i also pulled an m.2 drive from an adapter and i took apart one of the ssds that i have lying around that i wanted to put on the rack and made it fit with the smaller configuration on the inside.
  • So there are a total of 6 drives hooked up to this device.  Two internal and four external even if two of those are connected with usb adapters.  I could have gone with a shorter rack since i dont need the larger power supply but this does give me some space to grow in the future.  I dont know what else i will put on it but i am thinking about dusting off the raspberry pis since the mounting plates that i have found have designs for them as well.  Maybe a pi on one side and a couple of drives for it on the other
  • While i was putting this all together my other rack decided it didnt like running.  it wasnt even a hot day and i was not doing any heavy moves.  But suddenly the drives were no longer accessible.  I tried the IOMMU off trick but the pcie sata card would not be seen.  Not either of the 6 ports or the 10 port and the 5 port that always works was only seen once.  I did eventually get it to be seen again and i see that one the 8tb drives is being seen by the system but is not mountable.  i tried the normal fsck and similar commands but the superblock seems to be corrupt.  I have some other tools that might be able to do it on the garage pc in a gui but i need to figure out which physical disk it is and i did that by disconnecting and reconnecting one at a time until the right one went away.  then i started transferring everything off of one of the other 8tb drives in the garage pc onto something else but that took a very long time which i will talk about later.  I will probably take that particular drive from the garage pc and swap it while i try to get the data back.  If i cant get it back and transfer over i can rebuild that data and re get all the photos that are backed up to other locations.
  • That is when i decided that i needed to make a change and ordered a new piece of hardware for my birthday. A gift to myself. But we shall get back to that.
  • I did get the hard drive removed and hooked to the garage PC where strangely enough it just plain worked. So back to the mini rack it goes and i was able to get it to read again. I did get it passed through to OMV again and then i did need to do an fsck from there to clean up the last of the issues it had. So it is back where it belongs and working as expected. But i need a way to help prevent this in the future.
  • Thence comes my present to myself. I ordered a motherboard. Really a motherboard CPU combo. I5 8th gen ITX with a low profile CPU cooler and 8 sata ports as well as a pcie x4 slot and 2 m.2 slots as well as 2 2.5g ethernet ports on the board. This should help to minimize the number of janky adapters that i am using which should help with the drops that i was experiencing before. I was not able to find a handy NVME drive and the board would not see the NGFF drive that i had on hand and i was only able to find a spare 16gb of ddr4 ram so i decided to just move everything over from the other device. I will be going from a i7 8th gen to an i5 8th gen but i think the onboard 2.5g and 8 sata ports more than makes up for it. SO the device has a 2.5 ssd and 32gb of ram. While hooking everything on it up to the rack i did notice that some of the sata cords were starting to fray. These are the low profile right angle cords that i picked up for internal connections and i dont think that they were supposed to be put through the crap that i have done to them so i am not surprised. I have plenty of cables and these will get replaced soon enough.
  • I did get to 3d print a rack mount for it and was lucky that the face plate matched up from the 3d print. There was a template and i could have designed my own but i was printing these while the item shipped to me and the image looked the same even if the model number was different.
  • Everything with that device worked as expected. I did have to mouse and keyboard my way into it so that i could update the primary nic again and the reboot takes forever but i think that i can make some future improvements to that. Also since it has the two nics i think that i can eventually also make this my DIY router. Or use the spare HP now that i think about it since it also has two nics and my internet connections is not fast enough that i need to worry about both being 2.5g
  • I should also mention that the power supply that i already have on the rack is a full size atx power supply and i just needed to remove the power button adapter and find the four pin and hook those up. I might get some right angle adapters in the future to help with height and i thought i was going to need to cable up a power button but i got lucky and this motherboard has one built in
  • After doing the shuffle of hard drives to make sure that i was using the best processor and ram for each device, one of my other nodes just would not boot.  I thought that it was a cable issue but after taking it apart that turned out to not be the case maybe.  The hard drive was only sometimes seen.  i think this may be due to the cable that connects to the motherboard being fragile but i tried a different one as well and neither of them worked.  I will order two more but for now i am using the onboard m.2 on the one device and holding off on the other.  I did have to reinstall proxmox, delete the old node and add in the new one.  Then i was able to restore joplin and home assistant from backups but needed to make a new VM and a new jellyfin instance, but thats ok this one is an lxc with hardware acceleration.  Now i just have to get all the users added back in
  • Also since i was no longer using the VM for the jellyfin instance and its not connected to the machine with direct access to the drives i needed to be creative with setting up the shares so i can easily reconnect the samba shares without having to restart the computer.  I decided to add a pre-start hookscript to the startup of the lxc in the same way that OMV has a post-start script.  I got rid of the delay and now restarting jellyfin also makes sure that the shares are connected.  So if the shares do drop instead of manually reconnecting or restarting the whole system i just have to restart the one LXC.
  • I was also able to find another dvr for 6 dollars which had a 500gb hard drive in it instead of a 1tb like the last one. But i can still find a use for that. It also had a fairly sturdy looking 40mm fan with a 3 pin connector that needs a bit of testing. But if i need some cooling it will be good.  I will keep buying these when i find them even if it is just for the two parts.  Although the right angle sata extender that i mentioned earlier did come from one of them.
  • I also started having a problem with the garage pc.  It keeps freezing.  Especially when i am doing anything graphically intensive.  This indicates that there is either a problem with ram or the graphics card.  I do have other ram that i can use to test and another motherboard as well.  I am really hoping that the issue is not the graphics card since i got that from Bill and i know he would like it back one of these days.  It has been very hot in the garage so maybe that caused the issue.  Or it could be we had some kind of power fluctuation that caused the problem.  I will have to take it apart to find out more.  But then i started having problems with the 2.5g pcie card and transfer speeds on the hard drives are hot garbage.  Then i remember that this thing is like 7 years old and i have not been gentle with it.  I mean i have even had to replace the momentary switches on the case because they had worn out.  Probably because of how humid it is in texas but still.
  • I could test the ram easy enough as i have plenty i also have other drives and some very very old graphics cards which are untested.  But im pretty sure the best thing for me to do is test the motherboard.  I know that previously it was having issues with certain slot pairings on the ram which is indicative of bad lanes so why not other problems. Such as slow hard drive speeds and the network cutting in and out for it?
  • thankfully i have an exact copy of this motherboard that i picked up when a friend was getting rid of spare parts.  And whats more likely that all of these individual parts started breaking all at once or that the one item tying them all together is breaking?  I guess it could be the power supply too but i also have plenty of those.  So time to rebuild a computer!!!  Havent done that in a while.  But if it dont work maybe it will be time to go to microcenter
  • Anyways it was a super easy process to pull everything off the one mother board and move it over to the other. I did pull out and verify that one of the 32gb sticks that i had was bad in that it would not work paired and also would not work singly by itself. so it is set aside until i magically learn to repair ram. The motherboard did appear to be the issue as i have not had another problem with the computer since. I probably should have hooked up that 500gb hdd for testing while i was at it but i am not too concerned.
  • I did most of the work in my kitchen though because there is another heatwave in texas and i was happy with all of these devices and being able to use my portable monitor as a primary on my kitchen counter.
  • The next problem that came up is my router. The 2.4ghz antenna keeps showing as no internet. Also sometimes it will not allow either of my ddns setups to work. A restart will fix the ddns issue but has stopped working for fixing the 2.4. I have put in a temporary fix with one of the mesh routers that i have installed ddwrt on. It connects to the 5ghz and rebroadcasts on the 2.4. This is a temporary fix. I dont see this working long term as the router continues to degrade. The problem is i spent my tech budget on the new computer so now i have to get creative again. Sadly this creativity will cost me one of my ddns’s because it is from asus. Probably also one of my backup wireguard setups. But thankfully i am fully prepared with redundancy.
  • It was quite an adventure to actually get all of the steps done in openwrt using LUCI to get the device into a proper bridge mode where the parent router was providing the dhcp table. I do now get proper ip addresses from the device and as long as im connecting through it i can access the LUCI interface. But it still does not allow me to use things like kde connect for whatever reason.
  • But while i had it hooked up to my tiny laptop i made sure to take a copy of the setup. Now i should only have to restore from backup and adjust the ip and turn off dhcp for each device i choose to use and while they are only wifi 5 that should be a good starting place for my home setup until i get some wifi 7’s and i have a bunch of them that i can use. Plus the things that need more speed are all wired.
  • This hopefully will force me to start building my own setup with openwrt and get away from commercial routers. that should be a good learning experience.
  • And then something crazy happened. I went to the Goodwill and i found a pcb for a RAMA U80A keyboard, with keycaps for $6.99. This is a $500 keyboard, up to a thousand with some accessories. Absolutely insane. I had also seen a set of mechanical keys at a different resale and while they are not the clicky ones that i prefer the price is good i see it as appropriate to get the keys from resale as well. No casing for the keyboard although the weight was there. Even missing parts this is still an incredible find. I then went and designed a simple back plate that i could easily put some heatset inserts into and ordered some standoffs and some stabilizers. I wanted to make it as simple as possible because i wanted it done quickly. I did have to increase the thickness of the first design and make it a little bit narrower. This will be a lower profile build than what it was originally designed for and will be a wired build for now but overall happy so far. I printed the backplate and then got some self tapping screws i did have to glue some spacers into place to keep the distance needed between the plate and pcb correct but that was all that i was to use from that set as the pcb is set up for 2mm standoffs and i got 3mm.  Then i found out that it is not the hot swappable version but the solder version so it will be much harder to change the keys out in the future.  But i am not too concerned as I tend to use wireless and this is more just for the fun of it.
  • I also decided that sense i had everything out that i would setup my last HP mini into the second rack so that i can eventually start playing more with either openwrt or opensense as i continue to have wireless issues on my router and want to get this sorted sometime this year.  Its either that or purchase another router.  This is the mini that was formerly in the garage and had the hard drive pulled.  i installed proxmox on it but was not paying attention and there was no internet connection during the install.  This caused a myriad of problems.  Probably would have been easier to just reinstall and did consider it but where would the fun in that be and i wouldnt have as much stuff for Bill in this episode.  I mean seriously, tell me that my show notes go by too quickly.  Anyway this has two ethernet ports on it, one 1g and one 2.5g which makes it kind of perfect for this.  But on to the issue, i had to change the ip address in /etc/network/interfaces to change the default nic and update /etc/hosts as well as /etc/hostname with a unique name and then i had to access the interface and update the dns server and also had an actual bad ethernet cable that was fun to find but in the end i got it working.  Nothing really installed on it yet but it is there and waiting.  I will have to redo the primary nic and work on passing the secondary but it will not be a problem.
  • Also while i had the rack apart to install it i got the 2.5g switch to replace the 1g netgear and i moved the ethernet patch panel to the rear of the rack due to space constraints.  I am looking into some alternative prints to help with the aesthetic in the front as the cables are a bit more visible than i like but it works for now.  I will also need to get some more cables in the future.
  • The reason the port setup is perfect for this is that i only have a 300/300 internet connection so i only need the 1g inbound but i want the higher speeds for internal networking.

Blu-ray Player: You may recall from a previous episode that my recently purchased Dell OEM stock Blu-ray drive model HL-DT-ST that I purchased for about $50 on Amazon to replace the older Pioneer Blu-ray RW drive that mechanically failed after I reconnected it inside my Dell media desktop would not work to read Blu-ray discs with MakeMKV in that desktop. That is, until I posted in the MakeMKV forum for help explaining the issue and also mentioning how my Matshita Blu-ray drive in my laptop that also runs Linux Mint does work in contrast. It took some posting of details and log files from MakeMKV for both optical drives, but a forum poster on the MakeMKV forum helped me out with specifics and by simply adding a short line of text starting with sdf_Stop and some other characters based on the model and serial number to the config file, I was finally able to read and rip a Blu-ray in my media desktop and save the files right to the big 4 TB external hard drive that has all my content for Plex and Jelllyfin. Hitachi G-raid external hard drives: I talked on the most recent Roundtable about how I own seven 6 TB Hitachi G-raid external HDDs and two 8 TB of the same, that are between sixteen and six years old, with most of them safely tucked away in my 850 pound safe. These drives were only used for two or three years until they were filled up and then tucked away for safekeeping. These drives represents 58 TB worth of storage, easily worth around $3,000 at today’s prices, something I want to take advantage of now that I have become something of a digital hoarder. These drives largely contain old data and backups that I do not need to save any longer. Adding some urgency to this was the reality that at least one of the controllers on the 8 TB HDD that I used lately for backup was no longer allowing it to connect to any computer reliably,. So I copied the few TB of personal backups and archives that I deemed worth saving onto newer storage, and decided that this would be a hardware project I would embark on. The goal is to liberate the 18 HDDs from the nine external G-raid drives and amass a large pool of storage that I could use to automate my daily and regular backups to, store my growing digital archives with redundancy, and also expand the local storage for my media. Joe helped me identify my options when I explained that I have three desktops, one of which is a gigantic Cooler Master tower that a friend put together for me in 2011 as a high end video editing computer. This is the computer where I replaced the bad RAM stick for $14 recently, and is working great now with Linux Mint and GhostBSD. So I put together a shopping list on Amazon based on some of Joe’s recommendations and others I figured out in order to make use of the three desktops that I already have so I could place these 18 HDDs, assuming all are good, into these three desktops I already own so I could have always-on storage for my direct use as well as automated backups, and archiving.

Dell Inspiron 3847: I wanted to start with something manageable, so this desktop I use as a media device with QBittorrent, Plex, Jellyfin and music players was where I started. It currently has a 2.5″ SSD with Linux Mint as the main operating system, a 2 TB HDD it came with that has Windows 10 down in the two pre-installed metal hard drive bays, and a Dell OEM DVD-RW drive, and the Dell OEM Blu-ray player I just talked about above in the two top 5.25″ bays connected to 4 SATA data ports on the motherboard. To this I want to add two 4 TB Hitachi drives liberated from one of the G-raids. I started by adding a two port SATA card into a PCI slot at the back of the desktop since I would now have at least five devices. Also a SATA power splitter would be necessary for more than four devices, so I used a six way splitter. I had to remove the Dell OEM DVD player that it came with since it is redundant to the Blu-ray player, assuming that I won’t ever burn a DVD again, and especially since I needed one of the two top the 5.25″ bays to relocate the Toshiba 2 TB HDD that has Windows on it. The SSD would go into a bracket I purchased connected to a PCI slot at the back of the desktop. The two transplanted 4 TB Hitachi HDDs now slot into the Del OEM metal railings into metal bays on the bottom. The inexpensive metal brackets I purchased holding the 3.5″ Toshiba HDD with Windows in the second from the top 5.25″ bay are a little janky since I had to supply my own correct sized screws to connect them to the HDD, and because it’s only secured to the computer with the two smaller screws accessible at the open side of the case, and not the back of the case, causing the HDD to list a few degree to the back side where the brackets are not screwed in. But it seems fine for now. Maybe I can spend a few bucks on better brackets or an enclosure that slots in more snugly. In any case I now have 10 TB of storage on this media desktop I intend to use directly. Both 4 TB Hitachi HDDs say Disk is Ok in Disks app, so I should be good to reformat them and start using them.

Cooler Master Tower and Celeron: That leaves fourteen more HDDs to be placed. I can fit two more HDDs in the two metal bays in my $25 Craigslist Celeron desktop if I relocate the 2.5″ SSD to the back by the PCI slots. And potentially as many as fourteen more HDDs in the gigantic tower. To do this, I must relocate the two 2.5″ SSDs there in brackets to the back of the case near the motherboard, and everything fits as expected. For the HDDs there would be five in the dedicated HDD bays at the bottom, six more in two dual 5.25″ bay to three HDD enclosures I purchased for the top four front bays, plus two more in conventional positions in the bottom two 5.25″ bays underneath those enclosures, as well as one 3.5″ HDD in a bracket at the back of the tower connected to a PCI slot, along with a 16 SATA PCI card, and a lot of data cables and power splitters. I will have to see if everything fits as expected and the power supply and combined heat are not issues if all this gets stuffed in there. I’m sure I’ll have an update about this ambitious plan on the next episode.

      Thank you again for your helpful hints regarding replacing the batteries
      in my Monster wireless ear buds.

      At long last the replacement batteries arrived.  Both were > 3.7v, so i
      did not have to use the vape charger trick (refer to earlier Vibrations
      from the Ether).   The replacement was pretty straight forward; no
      problem soldering the leads onto the new batteries.   A little flux
      helped ensure a quick solder connection.

      The only hiccup was initial testing with earbuds open on my bench.  They
      ran for hours in this configuration if i did not touch them.  As soon as
      I handled either one, they started to cut out.   It appears that the top
      cap, which was not attached, forms part of the antenna.    Apparently
      many ear bud designs use part of the case as the antenna.   thank you chat.

        Overall, I consider this a win.

    • Has anyone tried Raspberry Pi OS? They produce an X86 variant. I mention it because the Pi engineers have trimmed things down a lot in order to get a DE of sorts on a 1GB Pi. However, it hasn’t been updated  since July of ’22. It’s based on Bullseye. Further information at https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/It would be my last resort since a lot of the things they do to make it work in their environment make it awkward for the experienced Linux user.best,
