News:

  • First Steam Machine Priced At $499; Xbox One Is In Trouble- iBuyPower announced that their Steam Machine, due out in early 2014 and bundled with the first iteration of the SteamOS, will be available for only $499. Yes, the exact same price as the Xbox One, but far more powerful. (cinemablend.com)
  • Linux chief: “Open source is safer, and Linux is more secure than any other OS” – “In an interview with Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin, VentureBeat got a bird’s-eye view of the future of the open-source operating system for 2014.” The interview addressed the controversial issues of government spying and “backdoors”. Zemlin talked about how and why GNU/Linux remains the most secure option for concerned consumers. (venturebeat.com)
  • Canonical Dev Calls Linux Mint “Vulnerable”, Wouldn’t Use it For Online Banking – Users of the popular Ubuntu-based operating system Linux Mint should not use it for online banking, a Canonical engineer has advised. Mint’s decision to prevent packages with known security issues from updating, from the kernel and browser to the boot-loader and Xorg display server, leaves its users with a “vulnerable system”, says Oliver Grawert. (omgubuntu.co.uk)
  • Clem responds – “I hear a Canonical dev was more opinionated than knowledgeable and the press blew what he said out of proportion. I wouldn’t mind too much, if we weren’t finding ourselves answering questions from panicked users rather than working on what matters right now (i.e. Mint 16 RC). So I’ll be brief.” (segfault.linuxmint.com)

  1. Scott, your absence has left you a little rusty on your ability to keep Rob in check. This week he spent a whole four minutes describing his troubles installing chromium-browser.

  2. Canonical dev comments? Sounds like distro-wars! Regular Mint updates are nearly always to do with Firefox so I guess Clem and the team have a handle on it.
XP is maybe fine until you need to go on-line, THEN comes the heart-ache.
Thanks for the LM16 Petra Mate review. I usually manage to break my system by the time the latest version comes ’round so it’s arrived just in time! There was an issue with LM15 print-to-file which I use a lot function so I shall be trying LM16.

  3. Hey guys, great show. But why plug in you android device to add/rearrange files. Why not just use the Air droid app?
